James Bay Inn Hotel

We stayed at James Bay Inn for 3 nights. The rooms are small but we like the atmosphere of a historical hotel. The room was very clean and the service at the front desk was great. This is our second stay here and we will definitely be back.

Once upon a time I lived and worked about two blocks from the JBI. I’ve eaten in their restaurant and their pub countless times but have never been a guest of the hotel. Flash forward to present day — I live in another city and recently went back for a weekend with my husband. Perfect opportunity to complete my JBI experience! If you want to get a sense of Victoria in its early years this is the place to stay. The hotel has been lovingly maintained. No elevator but not an issue for us. Our room was on the second floor just above the entrance so it had a lovely view of quiet Government Street. Oh, how I’ve missed the sound of those horse-drawn carriages! Our room was a toasty warm haven during a cold snap and it had huge windows to let in lots of light. Newly renovated with a massive washroom and a comfy, comfy bed. Friendly staff. We had breakfast both mornings in the restaurant and the food is just as good and reasonably priced as it was when I was part of the neighbourhood. And James Bay is one of my favourite Victoria neighbourhoods with its heritage charm, safe streets, and close proximity to downtown. Loved that the parking was free and we could walk to everything we wanted to do. Whenever we go back to Victoria, we’ll definitely stay at the JBI.

I travelled off season, so I was able to get an excellent deal on a room, which enabled me to stay in Victoria for 5 lovely days. I took the first scheduled ferry of the day, which meant I was much too early for check-in. The man at the desk let me park the car in the lot and I was able to walk down Government Street and see the sights. The location is so convenient – situated in a quiet residential area, but close enough to shops and sights. The hotel restaurant is quite good. Breakfasts are delicious and a great value, and there are some very good dinner specials. My room was quite small, but perfect for traveling solo. The bed was really only big enough for one! The building is over 100 years old and charming. Yes, there are stairs to climb! I really didn’t mind them. I loved the radiator in the room, which kept me toasty on the chilly Autumn nights. There was free wifi in the rooms and free coffee and tea in the lobby. I will stay here again!

Outstanding location equal distance to downtown shopping / Government Street attractions, and the Dallas Rd. beaches/ waterfront and Beacon Hill park. Also less than 2 blocks away from the Emily Carr house.
The inn is an interesting historic building, with an antique-y feel. Slanted floors (I did not mind them – they add character imo!) and old- fashioned coil heaters, the radiant heat was perfect for this time of year.
I see lots of complaints among reviewers regarding the stairs. I actually LIKE those stairs as I view them as good exercise! Not all ‘older’ people require an elevator.
Convenient restaurant with excellent food. I was surprised at how good the food was as the restaurant is kind of hidden downstairs so we didn’t know what to expect. We didn’t try the pub as it sounded noisy but fortunately quieted down at an early-ish hour and we weren’t bothered by noise at all during the night.
The small double (petit) rooms are great value and we don’t mind the small size, but all of them should have a queen sized bed and a full bathroom with tub as well as shower. We were fortunate to be able to switch to a different room after the first night of our stay to get a room with a tub. But we had to move all our stuff, of course, and we did not have the info. up front through the booking site, or the website for the inn which we also checked, that the room we had booked did not have a tub. A glitch for sure, but the staff were very accommodating and put a concerted effort into switching us to one of the petit rooms that has a tub. It was a long wknd., so the place was busy and full but we really enjoyed the small room with the tub and would stay there again.

Spent 8 nights with a buddy, who, when he mentioned that his room was noisy from the housekeeping room, they immediately gave him a great upstairs room and made me jealous because it was bigger than mine. Steve and the rest of the front desk staff were wonderful, and the area around there was fun to walk around in. You could also walk to the amazing Provincial Museum and downtown from there. The coffee in the place was weak, though–my only complaint. Old building, no elevator. Felt nice to be there. Housekeeping bounced from great to not so good on different days.

I loved this little hotel. It’s location is just south of the main business district; the location is on a “main” street but the surroundings are residential in its immediate area. I found it very convenient. The lobby was very warmly appointed, the rooms clean and the bed excellent. Staff was more than helpful. The on-site restaurant was more than reasonably-priced and had GREAT food and good service. If I had a complaint, it was that the rooms were a bit cold – but – when I inquired if the heat could be turned up I was offered a portable heater to make it “better.” That solved my problem. (The rooms do not have individually-controlled heating.) Note: this is an older hotel and does not have an abundance of amenities, but was an EXCELLENT value for the price.

It seems like Victoria has a year-round high season, so finding a room at a reasonable price can be very challenging. I looked at a number of discount web sites but none offered a good deal within easy walking distance of the Inner Harbour and the downtown area. So I went back to the James Bay Inn website and found a good price, made all the better with a $10 discount they offer for booking through their website. It’s a heritage building, and I knew the room might be small, and it was. It looked like it was originally a larger room, but divided in order to include a bathroom (shower only). We were on the third floor, but the inside view was uninteresting. By the way, no elevator, and the stairs are quite old and sloped – let’s say they have character. We were disappointed there was no coffee maker in the room – first time that’s been the case in years. It was only when we checked out that we noticed the coffee service in the lobby (which was being put away), wish the front desk had told us when we checked in. However, the price was good, the bed was comfortable and we had a good night’s sleep. Free parking too, so with these few caveats in mind I don’t hesitate to recommend James Bay Inn for the budget-conscious traveller who doesn’t mind stairs.

We had a great room on the second floor in the corner of the hotel with a bay window. It was large and comfortable. The hotel is filled with antiques and old photos. It even has it’s own resident ghost!!
The restaurant has amazing food. Breakfast there will keep you going for the entire day! The chef’s evening three course special is well worth the price.
The hotel is within walking distance of the legislative building, inner harbour, and downtown, plus many good small eateries.
Definitely a hotel to try. Just be sure to ask for a room that faces Government Street, not the parking lot or back alley.

This hotel, located a few blocks from the waterfront, is a good base for a walking tour of Victoria. We stayed one night in a “connected room”. We had a queen bed in one room connected through the bathroom to a double bedroom. Mattress was very comfortable in the Queen room. Not fancy, bathroom fittings from the 70’s/80’s, otherwise a plain room. Good wireless coverage.

Had a ‘petite’ room and found it big enough for a solo traveller.
Includes a small desk and a small TV but would have liked a kettle in the room.
Basic furnishings but comfortable and great value for money.
Historic building with some nice public spaces to sit and relax outside of the room, but some creaking and other noises could be heard due to its age. Furnished appropriately for its age but it is an old-fashioned style.
Free and fast wifi, friendly staff. No air con (but there is a small fan provided).
Didn’t get chance to try breakfast, but ate dinner here with some local friends and it was great value for money (15% off voucher for guests), the restaurant is a flashback to the 80s though! Pub is good.
Quiet location in a nice peaceful neighbourhood but just a short walk into town.
Overall, it’s nothing flash but is great value.

Our stay here was short. We were a bit disappointed with the small size of the room, and the somewhat dated feel to everything. Some would find this quaint, we on the other hand felt it lacked the vestiges of modernness.
We suffered with the lack of elevator and two heavy suitcases.
For location, this hotel is very well placed, with the parliament buildings just down the road, and being located on one of the main streets.
Our verdict on this hotel is a bit mixed.

Just a couple of blocks from the downtown and ferry terminal, feels like a residential area. Small but charmingly decorated room, large bathroom. Felt more like a bed and breakfast. Coffee and tea in the lobby. We got 15% off in the restaurant with an amazing breakfast.

We spent two nights here on a recent week long trip around Vancouver Island. First of all it has a great location in the tranquil and beautiful James Bay area which is very convenient for most of the downtown attractions. However to reach check in you have to climb a 19 step staircase with your luggage and then once you are allocated a room, heaven help you if you are on the upper floors as there is no elevator (and we had some heavy suitcases). The room itself was very traditional and clean although the toilet was right next to the door which made it difficult to use. Breakfast in the restaurant downstairs was EXCELLENT – good value and friendly staff. The attached pub though was disappointing as the beer choice was very limited (and served too cold).

The room we had was clean and well presented although cluttered with furniture and with a very noisy fridge sitting on the floor. This hotel is to me a good example of where cheap additional things would have made an OK hotel a great one. Water is available from an urn down in the foyer but it would have been great to have a small bottle left in the fridge. The common areas were not used and could have been much more welcoming as a place to relax in ifvmagazines and newspapers had been available. The welcome and checkout was really poor. No one welcomed us nor did they ask how we enjoyed our stay. No one ever said good morning as we passed the reception or checked how things were. No offer was made to help with our luggage either going to our room after check in or on leaving the hotel. Fine if you are fit but there is no lift so expect to lug your cases up and down as many as three floors yourself. There is a restaurant and bar associated with the inn. It’s OK. Standard pub food.

I loved my stay. The hotel definitely has a lot of character and the location can’t be beat for exploring downtown Victoria. My friends and I stayed in the adjoining room and it was a real bargain-2 rooms for the price of one, you just have to share the bathroom. Steven at the front desk was always friendly and helpful. There are no elevators so if you have mobility problems or if you want posh 5 star accomodations this is not the place for you. However if you like clean, charming boutique hotels in great locations at a great price this is the place for you. The only negative – the bed was too firm.
