If you’re going to stay at the Strathcona, you’ve got to understand that its big allure is the location and price. It’s barely a few minutes walk from the ferry, various shuttle pick ups, and we could see the Royal BC museum from our room. It was a great place while we were out and about being touristy during the day, and to be perfectly honest, extremely handy for when we were enjoying the night life and drinking that night.
The room was quite small, but the space was used very well and I didn’t feel like anything lacked for it. A queen bed room was just about perfect for two people. You absolutely will not fit more than one person in the bathroom if you need it to get ready though, unless you plan on standing either on the toilet or in the tub. There were multiple mirrors throughout the room, which was convenient (and probably helped it to feel less cramped), especially because a shower will make the bathroom mirror unusable.
Our room was directly over the bars and street side, so if you find the sounds of hooting drunks, heavy bass, and passing cars soothing, you’ll sleep like a babe. Also very easy to hear people opening and closing doors and walking around in the hallway outside.
But there’s also quite a nice liquor store downstairs, which really helped to drown out the background noise.
If you get a room here, you’ve got to embrace what the hotel is good at, and you’ll be fine.
My only real complaint was that the windows in the room were very, very dirty. If you’ve got a room with such huge windows and a view, keep ’em clean!
