It seems like Victoria has a year-round high season, so finding a room at a reasonable price can be very challenging. I looked at a number of discount web sites but none offered a good deal within easy walking distance of the Inner Harbour and the downtown area. So I went back to the James Bay Inn website and found a good price, made all the better with a $10 discount they offer for booking through their website. It’s a heritage building, and I knew the room might be small, and it was. It looked like it was originally a larger room, but divided in order to include a bathroom (shower only). We were on the third floor, but the inside view was uninteresting. By the way, no elevator, and the stairs are quite old and sloped – let’s say they have character. We were disappointed there was no coffee maker in the room – first time that’s been the case in years. It was only when we checked out that we noticed the coffee service in the lobby (which was being put away), wish the front desk had told us when we checked in. However, the price was good, the bed was comfortable and we had a good night’s sleep. Free parking too, so with these few caveats in mind I don’t hesitate to recommend James Bay Inn for the budget-conscious traveller who doesn’t mind stairs.
