Humboldt House has a lot to recommend it:
A beautiful old home, well-located on a quiet street just a few minutes walk from downtown; comfortable beds; a friendly and helpful staff; ample off-street parking. Arriving guests are greeted with a glass of champaign and an excellent chocolate. Warm cookies magically appear in the library each afternoon. Breakfasts are a choice of three items, all tasty but not over-the-top rich and loaded with calories.
But there are limitations:
There’s no dining area, so breakfasts are delivered at 20 minutes intervals to each room (you sign up for a time slot the night before). This is fine for couples, but may work less well for families or groups traveling together. The bedrooms are not small, but are over-furnished to the point that they feel cramped and a bit hard to get around in. More significantly, each of our family’s rooms were “split-level”– they have two areas separated by broad steps. This is visually attractive, but coupled with dark carpeting it could result in a fall, particularly if you get up in the night. (My wife in fact took a small tumble on the two steps in our room.)
Overall, I think most visitors would quite enjoy a stay at Humboldt House if these limitations were of no concern.
