We love to stay in non-standard accomodations and Gatsby Mansion definitely fills the bill. The house was built in 1897, I believe, and has had several incarnations. Now it is a bed and breakfast and is part of the Huntingdon Manor hotel. The location is super and the parking was free. We left our car for the weekend and walked all over Victoria. It was very enjoyable and comfortable.
The entrance was not manned when we arrived so we checked in at the adjoining hotel. The lobby was pleasant and there was a nice fire in the fireplace with a place to sit. I also noticed a small lounge on the third floor where we stayed.
We booked the turret room. Spectacular view of the harbor and very quiet. The room was large and furnished with period pieces, including an armoire since there was no closet. The wifi was free and strong. The bathroom was well appointed and very clean. The tub was large and there was a tiled surround with plenty of space to put soaps and shampoos. For such an old house the water pressure was amazing. The bed was very comfortable and the pillows and bedding were fresh and clean. There was a plug-in heater which we did not need as the room was warm even on a cold day in February. There is also a ceiling fan and a freestanding fan. An iron and ironing board are provided as well as slippers and robes. The complimentary toiletries are high quality.
We had little contact with the staff but when we did see them they were very pleasant and polite.
Breakfast was provided and we ate there both mornings. There are three choices, scrambled eggs, pancakes, or fruit and yogurt parfait. The pancakes were the best choice. Bacon, sausage, and ham were offered. We tried the bacon and sausage and preferred the bacon. There was not much flavor to the sausages. The weakest item was the scrambled eggs. They appeared to be a foodservice product and didn’t have much flavor. Each table had their own pot of coffee which was a nice touch. Had the breakfast not come with the room we probably would have eaten elsewhere.
All in all, Gatsby Mansion is a very comfortable place to stay and is rich in history. Although there is no elevator they offered to carry our luggage up and down for us if we had needed help. For location and comfort and the uniqueness of the building I definitely recommend it.
